A written brief is a must. This gives all parties something to refer back to and means that nothing gets overlooked in the design process. Once this is received an initial meeting to discuss the brief and talk about any other relevant information, mandatory requirements or questions. If this is not your thing we can work together to get the foundations right before the design process starts.
Once the brief is tight and an agreement is made I will then progress with research, this will include competitors, target within the sector, trends and conceptual areas to explore. Rough ideas are then presented back to agree on next steps such as timings, development and direction.
Drawing is a big part of my practice and helps me to generate ideas quicker, cherry picking the ideas that work and ditching the ones that don’t. From here I then start to create in black and white to focus on my composition. I will explore typefaces, photography, iconography or illustration. For graphics projects I generate 3 concepts to show how different approaches would work and apply each concept to a range of products or media to give a snapshot of how the project would evolve.
Design concepts are then presented back and discussed in depth, here we look at refining and agreeing which concept is to move forward.
Once the final designs has been approved, final artwork will be delivered in formats required within the brief. The process above is applied to most of the work I produce such as packaging, branding, in-store or illustration.
